Os depósitos de lixo são um verdadeiro veneno para o solo. Vários produtos químicos chegam 
misturados ao lixo. Esses produtos aos poucos se infiltram na terra e se acumulam ao longo 
do tempo. Quando a chuva cai, a coisa fica preta: o lixo e os produtos químicos são arrastados.

Muitas vezes esses venenos vão parar em plantações (contaminando os alimentos) ou em reservatórios de água (poluindo as fontes). Às vezes a infiltração é tão grande que chega a atingir lençois freáticos, que são uma espécie de reservatório subterrâneo de água. 

A montoeira de lixo também libera fumaça tóxica. O cheiro de um depósito de lixo é insuportável, por causa da liberação de um gás fedido e inflamável, chamado metano. 

As pessoas que trabalham nesses lugares precisam usar máscaras e tomar cuidado, porque podem pegar doenças como leptospirose e cólera. É também muito comum as pessoas colocarem fogo no lixo _ o que não é nada legal, porque essa queima libera gases poluentes.

O grande problema é que o homem produz lixo que não é reaproveitado pela natureza, como copos de plástico, latinhas de metal e garrafas de vidro. Essa parte sólida do lixo demora muito para desaparecer. Uma fralda de bebê, por exemplo, leva 500 anos para se decompor. A idade do Brasil!

São Paulo é a cidade brasileira que mais produz lixo: são 12 mil toneladas por dia. Uma das soluções para tanto lixo é a reciclagem. Plástico, papel, vidro e alumínio podem ser reaproveitados e transformados em coisas úteis novamente.
